Released October 12, Degenerate Music
THIS is a powerful slice of hard rock which takes Zico Chain to the most aggressive end of the post-grunge spectrum.
On 'These Birds Will Kill Us All' the London-based trio sound as akin to other British rock acts like Motorhead as they do to Creed and Saliva. And they’ve got a potential hit on their hands with hooks and big riffs aplenty. “We want your breath, we want your love, we want your skin” they scream before the emotive chorus kicks in. It’s just the sort of disaffected battle-cry that a rock club crowd will shout along with.
And, in 'Bile N Blood' and 'Daycase', there are two decent B-sides here as well. The latter is probably the best of the three - a pounding, punk-influenced track with some sing-a-long whoas tailor-made for a skank. Apart from Chris Glithero’s Seether-esque vocals and the odd guitar squeal there’s barely a hint of grunge influences throughout.
In 2007 Zico Chain’s debut album Food gathered some acclaim, selected for a single of the week slot on Radio One and reaching the number 1 spot on the MTV2 Rock Chart. If their latest underground tunes are a reflection of what’s to come it may not be the same again second time around. But this is the way to go to stay a cult act on the gig circuit. The band's second album is expected later this year.
