Released: March 23 2009 Dead Again Records
Everything about Video Nasties feels a bit retro – or classic, if we’re being nice; redundant, if we’re not. From that so very 1980s name (surely it’s only a matter of time before a band named Legwarmer are vying for our attention), to the pure seam of anguished indie rock they mine on this single, Video Nasties know their stronghold, and it is from there they pitch their battle.
“Jellybean” comes on like the prime thwarted romance of David Gedge’s Wedding Present, filtered through the anthemic MTV-friendly rock of 90s Brit bands like Three Colours Red and Symposium. It’s not essential, but neither is it terrible. And like the lone Goth flapping ungainly to Girls Aloud at the school disco, it might appear a little sadly anachronistic now, but only a fool could fail to find it just a tad loveable.
