The Bronx, a perpetually underwhelming punk act from LA, has returned under the guise of Mariachi El Bronx and, as the name would suggest, this time it’s Mexican!
So in place of bluster and ire we have lilting trumpets and jaunty violins, making the Bronx sound less like Dead Kennedys and more like the Mavericks. This could be a good thing, depending on how much of Radio 2’s Steve Wright in the Afternoon you can sit through without disenearing yourself, but alas the shuffling rhythm of ‘Cell Mate’s never quite reaches the listener’s toes and the whole thing drags rather than soars. Still, nice to know the Bronx have successfully transferred their talent for anonymous dirges from one genre to another.
