Released April 27 – The Animal Farm
If Lady Sovereign had chosen to spit her rhymes “Message in a Bottle” by the Police rather than “Close to Me” by the Cure for her new single “Human”, the result would have been very close to this song. In the minds of North London quartet Kyoshi, this probably sounds like a fresh and exciting combination of ‘street’ vocals with reggae-inflected indie. Unfortunately, in reality it sounds like some wretched re-release of UB40’s “Red Red Wine”; the kind of cash-in where horrid, grubby “yoof” gonks gibber all over the original while craggy, booze-ravaged former band members mime in the background and wonder when they can cash their gyros. Oh, and since the message obviously hasn’t got through – white people, stop trying to play reggae! Yes, you may sincerely love the music, but your love is like a farmer’s love for his sheep dog: perfectly fine if properly expressed, but if you cross that line you’re committing a crime and abusing an innocent.
