Idle Lovers- All Control

Could not be indie(r)

 Released 25th May 2009, download.

This really couldn’t be indie(r)
. You can almost see their floppy fringes slapping wetly against their adolescent brows; agitated guitars chop away at simple two or three chord sequences; lead singer Daniel Shepherd yowls like some London-born cross between Kurt Cobain and David Byrne; recent live shows included spots at venues called things like Water Rats and Stag and Dagger (both in London).
Such indier-than-thou allegations shouldn’t unduly faze the prospective listener; it’s a perfectly serviceable composition with an easily digested harmonic model. Further inspection of the written content show Idle Lovers have their lyrical wits about them. This is evidenced by the following, lively, example: “I don’t need a tattoo to you remind me of you, I’ve got the stars and the lines on my face”. Given Sheperds’ obvious youthfulness (the line is practically spat on the listener) the idea that he is excessively furrowed as a result of some breakup is laughable, but it works in the context of the song. 'All Control', all good.
