HK 119- Mind (Some DJ Remix)

'It’s not quite the sound of the apocalypse, but its not far off...'

Out now, Pacific Records.

HK119 has been one of those under the radar favourites for a while now.  Someone that didn’t really graze,  let alone hit, the edges of the mainstream HK (real name Heidi Kilpelainen) released an album, Fast Cheap and Out Of Control, of bonkers experimental electronica last year.  In amongst the at-times-trying, anti-society to’ing and fro’ing actually lurked a few cracking tracks, notably Mind and ‘C’est La Vie' (not a cover).  Both were pop at heart and that they didn’t get more recognition is a disappointment.

So it was with some trepidation that I listened to a mix of ‘Mind’ that wended its way into my inbox. Thankfully, Some DJ takes ‘Mind’ and subverts it from a depraved love song into a slow bouncing slice of electro house that would not have been out of place on the original album.

The scrunchy beats and tin whistle-y sounds combine over the ‘I can’t c-c-c-control my mind’ chorus and Heidi’s distorted voice, which has never sounded darker, create a wonderful sense of dread throughout.  It’s not quite the sound of the apocalypse, but its not far off. That being the case it’s really a tune for later in the evening, when drinks have been temporarily downed for altogether more frazzling substances.  Just don’t listen to it alone with the lights off...
