Another band in a seemingly endless string of indie talent to come out of Scotland, Frightened Rabbit are ready for the big time.
New single 'Nothing Like You' is as upbeat as the five-piece’s folk-meets-The Cure sound could get without losing the intimacy they’ve been winning plaudits for. And, whether intentional or not, it’s guaranteed evening radio play.
Furious acoustic guitar, a stunning string arrangement from label mate Hauschka and a chorus of country rock-style dual vocals make for a powerful wall of sound. But it's their ability to immediately sound as if they are performing for the listener in a smoky bar which makes them worthy of attention. Imagine The National's jangling sound at it's quickest and with a pronounced Scottish rasp.
B-side 'Learned Your Name' makes the disc itself a worthy purchase ahead of the release of the band’s third album The Winter Of Mixed Drinks on March 1. It’s a soothing folk number, featuring violins and piano with Scott Hutchison’s lead vocals at their most endearingly laconic.
Frightened Rabbit ended 2009 playing to huge crowds at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebration and have already been given air time by Radio One’s Zane Lowe. And their second LP The Midnight Organ Fight registered at number 89 in NME’s album of the decade poll.
Despite this early success, 'Nothing Like You' suggests the only way is up.
