Released 15th June 2009, by Marine Parade
Freeland are a fairly straightforward electro unit but counted among their ranks are the Distillers’ Tony Bevilacqua and űber industrial exponent Twiggy Ramirez, who has had stints in Marilyn Manson’s band and Nine Inch Nails. Far from reflecting the darker elements of their contributory members however, Freeland are an all together sunnier proposition. Sizzling sawtooths cut a jagged, vociferous gait before being reined in by an authoritative beat. Digitally cut up vocals trip over each other, barely registering as anything more than additional instrumentation. This is all in deference to the track’s essential purpose; it is frankly so good that a conventional lead vocal could only detract from the raucous, white hot offerings. It’s also an engrossing single release in that it is packed with remixes by such excitingly named acts as “Moonbootica” and “Pantyraid”. Thankfully the content of their mixes is also of a quality, the former throwing off a passable Daft Punk impression (passable Daft Punk is still amazing) and the latter veering off into stranger territories of ambience and a kind of techno-hip hop.
