'Doubt' has grown on me in a very short space of time. When I first got wind of it parcelled with the flaked enthusiasms of Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 earlier in the week I wasn’t familiar with Delphic’s work at all. At the time, I was switching stations in an attempt to gain solace from an otherwise failed radio search and just happened upon music that simply demonstrated more collective ability than anything I’d heard all evening, so I persisted. The introduction promised more than a mere musical fashion statement with those first lines:
Wanting meaning, wanting more than the same things
Wanting everything, just to start at the ending
It ran with cool simplicity, removing me from the funk of the day’s activities. Someone described this track as having 'complicated beats' when in fact the rhythm section is made up of a simple groove layered with drum samples similar to the type used by The Prodigy. The secret lies in its tasteful use of layers, riffs, samples and soft vocals that emulate the tones of the synthesizer. The fact that the memory of it passed the test of sleep is remarkable in my opinion but it did nonetheless and I was up the next morning searching around for more of their music. Then I find (like some obscure creature who's just come out of hiding) that they're tipped to be one of the hottest bands of 2010 along with acts such as Marina and the Diamonds and The Drums (both of which I was very familiar with). I swore from that moment on not to have Christmas again and began listening through as much of Delphic's material as I could get my hands on which wasn’t much. As a result I realised that if this band can keep up the momentum and quality of current material that we really should be firing out estimations of greatness further than 2010.
Their debut album, Acolyte, was released today on Polydor and I’ll put all my moneys on it being a classic electro-gaze masterpiece.
