Previously known for turning Radio 1’s collective heads when he covered Notorious B.I.G’s 'Hypntz', Dan Black returns for his first single proper. Holed up in Paris, Black has woven a veritable tapestry of hip hop, soul, rock and electro to create a mish-mash of sound which tries to emulate that of his idols David Bowie and The Neptunes. Previously with The Servant, a late Nineties indie group, he appears to have exchanged his musical leanings to suit those with a taste for Britney-Spears-does-Calvin-Harris.
Tipped on Radio 1 by Zane Lowe, 'Yours' is a thrusty, poppy, anti-love tune (“I don’t wanna be yours no more”) that is undoubtedly radio-friendly. The song, with the power of electronica, will more than likely set the charts ablaze with its stripped-back bassline, chunky drum beat and simple riff...and as a result will become overplayed then bothersome. For now though, my feet are tippity-tapping along to this hunk of future-funk while it grows more with every play, sticking to my brain like a limpet.
