Released April 27 – Witchita
This brace of rejiggings trails next month’s “Intimacy Remixed” album which does exactly what it says on the tin, being choc-full of remixes by trendy club types like, uh, Mogwai.
Judging from this release, however, it’s going to be much more than the sort of inessential farting about that makes up the standard remix album. The two re-imagings here each take the raw putty of the original and do interesting and, crucially, different things with it.
So while Armand Van Helden goes for the dark 80s synth rush, stifling the weepy soul-searching of the lyrics with a big bloopy noise, John King’s version goes all early-90s club track on your ass, with cut up shouts and hollers straight out of the big book of house diva vocals. The finished result sounds a little bit like “Ride on Time” by Black Box. Thus it wins.
