Amadou and Mariam – Sabali

'Some people have things to say about Albarn that are strictly for adults only, but “Sabali” is yet another moment of genius...'

Because Music, released 27/10/2008.

Although this blind Malian couple’s latest single comes with the words, “produced by Damon Albarn” stamped quite prominently on it, they are not really in need of celebrity endorsement. Their previous album, “Dimanche A Bamako” established them as one of Europe’s most popular acts. But the presence of Britpop’s chameleon probably helps, in more than simply the number of column inches.

Some people have things to say about Albarn that are strictly for adults only, but “Sabali” is yet another moment of genius. This African pop duo’s move away from their bluesy, Afro jazz melting pot may disappoint some, but here they definitely benefit from some electronic embellishments and Musey arpeggios in capturing a haunting piece of loveliness, with Mariam Doumbia’s sweet voice particularly successful at melting your heart. It’s got the sprinkling of poignancy needed for all good pop, combined with a level of production comparable to dancey sound experts like Royksopp.

So bloody good, then.
