Underground Heroes

"the energy of a million puppies chasing the same ball."

Ah, Chatham. Until now, it’s only real fame is to be the birthplace of the term, ‘chav.’ Glamorous. However, maybe one day soon it can be known for being something else. Maybe when people hear of Chatham, they will think of the band Underground Heroes in the same way that people think of The Prodigy when they hear Braintree, and Dreamland when they hear Margate. OK, that last one’s not a musical reference, but you get the idea.

Having played regularly at the Tap n Tin and at the ZOO8 (despite the problems) and Underage festivals last year, it’s a wonder how this band remain unsigned. They’re playing Underage again this year, so they must be doing something right. The best way to describe them was the NME calling them "The Jam if they'd have read the Razzle instead of books on politics."  Perfect.

Get Up And Go starts off like the best Libertines track you never heard, before switching to a tasty morsel of ska punk. It beggars belief how complete it sounds. You could easily imagine people going apeshit to this. Skinnie Twins proves their formula works, it’s equally as good but not too similar. It sounds more like a song by and English version of The View, but one of the better ones off their first album. The live version of Chasing The Buzz from London Calling shows that they have the energy of a million puppies chasing the same ball, such is the ferocious pace they tear through it. Finally, Skin And Bone is a slower jaunt, lyrically it’s like something Alex Turner would have come up with in the early days, and if you don’t find yourself chanting along with it by the end there’s something very wrong with you. Not that there isn’t already.

I’m told their live shows are amazing too, so surely some label must pick them up soon? They can’t stay Underground for too long.
