Melody and misery ooze out of The Cartels’ ambient and acoustic balladry wearing their self confessed influences (Richard Ashcroft, Noel Gallagher, John Lennon) firmly on their sleeves.
The Sheffield quartet sing lustfully in ‘Heart of Gold’ (“Smiling eyes and her friendly stare like a star and the clothes that she wears”) before ‘Shout It Out’ moseys somewhat uninterestingly to a whiney vocal which is desolate and debilitating in contrast to the previous crooner.
Catch them at The Grapes, Sheffield - August 14 and at The Harley, Sheffield Aug 31.
