The Part Time Heroes (Album Launch) Cargo 25 September 2008
Complimentary tickets to an album launch was tempered by a look at their myspace to see them filed under nu-jazz. Not a genre represented much in my music collection and I must admit to the odd prejudice of self indulgent musicians ‘noodling’ while goatee-bearded students in cords nodded appreciatively. As ever (thankfully) the reality is always different.
For there is nothing self indulgent about the music of The Part Time Heroes; rather, both sonically and visually, they are a joyous experience. As musicians they exhibit a poise and confidence borne of talent and belief and fulfillment in the music they are performing - soulful numbers like Angels Fly blend cohesively with the full on jazz funk of songs like 'Realise'.
The Part Time Heroes are the project of a Southampton duo who number eight as a live act; and while mention must go to not one but two sonorous female singers, every one of their number was an accomplished musician (perhaps some preconceptions of jazz are true after all).
While as a live act they are full on, there is also the not unimportant matter of the reason behind tonight’s show. Their debut album ‘Meanwhile’ is blissful throughout, the soundtrack to a care-free mid-afternoon on the Balearic’s White Isle, watching the sun slowly descend on the water.
A chilled out and assured debut, this is a cd you won't regret buying.
The debut album 'Meanwhile' is out now.
