Amongst the categories that the group have been nominated for are Best Album, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance by a Group and Song of the Year.

In an unprecedented act all of the nominations for Record of the Year are British with Coldplay being joined by MIA, Leona Lewis, Adele and former Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant.

Other artists from this side of the pond who are also up for gongs include Radiohead whose album In Rainbows is a contender for Album of the Year as well as Duffy and Sir Paul McCartney.

 The awards ceremony takes place on February 8th 2009 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.
