Elbow

when the big guns stop firing, you’re left with a tiny pistol

Ok, so I know they're this years darlings on the scene but haven’t Elbow always just been a mediocre indie pop band? Granted they’ve stepped it up a gear, the new album sounds like death cab, 5 years ago, churned up with Keane and spat out as regurgitated Coldplay. I’m not saying its bad exactly its just been done, over and over again and as happy as I am for them, having plugged away at the proverbial grindstone for countless years to have finally made some success of themselves, they’re a good few years behind making any kind of noise that even touches on original. So, where do they get off winning the Mercury Music Prize?

Honestly I haven’t spent a great deal of time on the new album but once you’ve heard one strung out chorus and dramatic outro, you’ve really heard them all. This is an old trick and unless you’re going to spice things up with an interesting and…well, brilliant piece of instrumental showmanship then, quite frankly, shut up!

This is, surely, a brilliant example of how much rubbish finds its way into the charts these days. For a band like Elbow, who have spent years in the shadows of bigger and better bands, all through the 90’s, to now take centre stage as the guys to aspire to be is, not so much an example of the perfect; try, try and try again, but more-so its a fine example of how, when the big guns stop firing what you’re left with is a tiny pistol.

I don't think Elbow is bad either - not at àll - but why is their latest single 'One Day like This' doing it so well in the (continental) charts? They've got way better songs than this, don't they. I just don't get why they pick this single to release in the charts, it just bores me to a lethal extent.

Concerning the Mercury Prize, I think it's well deserved. But I can understand that it sounds déjà-vu to some of us.

I don't see the link with Nirvana here, but I'm also one of those sixteen people in Europe that hasn't got their Nevermind.

well thats your opinion and all, and i didnt expect any less, i knew the moment i said i dont like elbow i'd get many a comment like that. but still, personally i just get bored half way through, its not that theyre not good musicians or good at what they do its just that theres nothing there that makes me think "wow", and i like a good "wow" moment in an album. and when i mention the kaisr chiefs, i wasnt suggesting that they in particular hold any competition for...well anyone, merely that we dont have the same onslaught of massive bands now as we did say, 10 years ago. if you're going to give the MM prize to someone for constantly developing and changing and pushing in every possible direction then surely, robert plant should have got it this year? i dont deny elbow have developed, when youve released as many albums, you kinda have to develop somewhere along the way, but theyve stuck pretty close to the vein they began on. and again, i dont think this album is their best.
(im gonna get lynched when i say i hate nirvana arent i? ah well)

'quite frankly all they really have to compete with is the Kaiser Chiefs' honestly that whole article is a blaze of stupidity, topped off with comments which shows a real distinct lack of thought. Elbow are a band who have developed on each album, making some hugely brilliant tracks, what album on the MM prize list do you think hasn't been done before someway or another? What does it matter if it's 5 chinese guys playing their beard's with some fish, what matters is the quality of the music, and thus Elbow thoroughly deserve it.

when i say 'all through the 90's' i wasnt refering to elbow being there all through the 90's rather that, the 90's endlessly produced massive bands that, by the late 90's early 00's made it hard for smaller, newer bands to emerge from out of their shadow. i think this is the problem with elbow, as i say, i am by no means saying that they are bad particularly, there are a million worse bands out there i dont deny that, but theyre still not special, or original in what they do, and that still means that, in my book, they dont deserve a prize. i am aware that this is somewhat a "controversial", as t'were, thing to say being that, as i said, they are rather the darlings of the music industry this year, which in itself has got to be a bit annoying surely? if i were a big fan, and i recognise that a band like elbow will have some very loyal followers that have been there since the beginning, i'd be pissed that only NOW are they being recognised as being as good as they are when, quite frankly all they really have to compete with is the Kaiser Chiefs and...those guys that arent the kaiser chiefs but sound exactly like the kaiser chiefs, if i were a fan. that said im not sure anyone on the MM shortlist really deserved to be there this year, but that may just be a wider reflection on music on a whole over the last 12 months...which it isnt becase there have been some amazing albums released. I also dont think 'the seldom scene kid' is their best album, and as such, if youre going to award someone, then surely it should be their best work that is done so

    Q. "haven’t Elbow always just been a mediocre indie pop band?"

    A. No, they have always been great. Their music is consistent, uplifting and inspired. 'Asleep In The Back' is one of the best debut albums and as good as 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.

I don't agree that Elbow got the MM prize as recognition for a career - I would like to think that more thought goes into it than that.

    On a final point...
"spent years in the shadows of bigger and better bands, all through the 90’s"

This makes no sense as Elbow are not a 90s band. Please get your facts rights.
