One of the best-kept secrets in rock music has today been revealed. The man who discovered Oasis playing in a back-street Glasgow drinking den finally broke his 15 year period of anonymity.
Alan McGee, the reclusive boss of Creation Records broke his 16 year media silence to reveal to Gobshout that it was him that first discovered the band.
He said: ‘You know I never like to talk about them (Oasis) and I prefer to shun the limelight, that’s why I never speak to the press and haven't done for the past 16 years. I am speaking now because I think it is about time Alan McGee got some credit.
‘It was a miserable Wednesday night, pissing with rain when I went to King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow. They used to do a happy hour – a pint of Tennents Super and a deep fried pizza supper for two quid. Those were the days!
'So I’m munching my deep-fried pizza when this load of scallies came on demanding to play. The singer was a right cool bastard… in fact he reminded me of myself. A taller and better looking version. Without the ginger hair. '
Anyway, there was about 15 people in and everyone thought they were shit except me. I signed them up and the rest as they say is history!’
Alan McGee went on to champion his new favourite band, Las Vegas glass-blowing outfit Glasvegas.
‘They are magic! They sing but they do it in this crazy Las Vegan accent. That to me shows that punk didn’t die. I’m still a punk, I will be a punk till I die. It wasn’t just a scene, it’s a way of life.'
The punk Alan McGee no longer works in the music industry and is now a multi millionaire property developer with a portfolio on both sides of the Atlantic.
He also has his own mobile shoe-shine emporium - currently based in Harlem, New York.
