The on-off Michael Jackson tour is still making headlines. Today the Sun claimed that the whole tour is in jeopardy because he is receiving treatment for skin cancer, yet again his spokesperson has denied the claims again stating he is in great health.
I’m wondering – a. why anyone would make up a story like this if it wasn’t true and b. why anyone would deny it if it was. I'm also wondering what the fuck is going on.
Another story that appeared in the NME today tells how Michael Jackson has made a series of demands to concert promoters AEG. Among the demands are an ‘exactly equal’ numbers of black, white, Asian and mixed-raced kids, all of whom know sign language. He is allegedly also looking for six matching snare drummers, without beards or stubble. Well obviously.
Other rumours that have been doing the rounds are that he is contracted to be on stage for just 17 minutes at each show, the rest of the time will be dancers and body doubles and that he will ride in on an African elephant.
I don’t know about an African elephant but Michael Jackson is a dead horse.
It is a shame that financial concerns have forced Michael Jackson into a tour he otherwise would not have done.
It is also a shame for the people who have bought tickets at vastly increased prices just to see him in concert for the last time.
But the biggest tragedy is that a young boy who set the world alight with his prodigious talent would grow up to be destroyed by his own fame.
