Shabby Rogue - By Hook and By Crook

Like a gig but not as good. And not because I'm not drinking beer.

Released 01/03/2010.

Opinions may differ on the relationship between live performance and recorded work.  Shabby Rogue seem determined to stick by the notion that trying to bring the gig into the studio is definitely a good idea.  This can work, but it’s not a given.  Especially not when adhered to slavishly at the expense of developing your material.  Can you see where I’m going with this?

By Hook and By Crook gives us signs of a decent band but not enough of them.  Northern Lights” attempts to be earthy but suffers from limp vocals, while “Old Man” is a far too wafer-thin attempt at moody.  My Life As A Secret Agent” is a passable edgy Kasabian meets Arctic Monkeys racket that, yes, probably sounds pretty good live.  But by and large there is simply not enough to hold the attention.  Jack In A Box” is under developed, “Every Light” is cringingly plain and so many of the songs feature repeated lyrical refrains that you can’t help but wonder if this band actually have anything real to say.

The problem with recording a studio record in the spirit of a live gig is that you magic into being the most accommodating and patient audience ever to exist.  This is not conducive to quality control or self editing.  By Hook and By Crook has fallen short on both counts.  Still, there’s no money in records so not to worry.  See them live instead.
