Gregory And The Hawk - Moenie & Kitchi

Gregory And The Hawk soar to new heights with new album.

Released October 13th 2008, FatCat Records

What makes a great singing voice these days? Judging by pop stars and X-Factor wannabes of the past few years, not a lot. But a truly great voice is one that can stun you immediately, without really having to try. Step up Meredith Godreau, who along with her on-off band are Gregory And The Hawk (a name designed to remove any stigma of being a female singer-songwriter). Hers is a simple, innocent, irresistible voice that is tailor made to be sung over gentle folkpop guitars and other instruments. And the marriage is a completely wholesome one.

Something of an internet success the other side of the pond, Gregory And The Hawk were signed up after being heard in a bar in Brooklyn. The wonders of Myspace and word of mouth meant she sold 15,000 copies of her songs before striking a deal, as well as a huge YouTube following. Trying to find a video for a song is impossible because of all the covers that have been uploaded. Her new album, Moenie And Kitchi, showcases her captivating voice as well as skilled musicianship, as the accompanying guitars are accomplished without being overstated, as the voice is the true instrument at work here.

'Voice Like A Bell' is a gentle giant, a monster of a song in minute form. 'Ghost' is equally stunning,  Some of the songs are almost punk-like in their brevity, as they come and wash over you memorably, and disappear just as quickly, leaving a warm sensation. 'August Moon' is a song that Laura Marling would kill for, and 'Doubtful' is a joy to hear. There are changes in mood as well, with 'Harmless' being a sorrowful lament, but for the most part Meredith sticks to what she’s good at, which is sweet, simple soundtrack-friendly pop songs.

The real problem is trying to distinguish herself from the rest of the pack. In a genre where a lot of artists sound alike, it is hard to be fresh and original. But I'm just nitpicking here. With songs this good, and a voice this great, it is hard to argue. A real find indeed, and well worth your attention.
