Released 9th August 2010, from Breakbeat Kaos
On this much anticipated album, DJ Fresh lets rip with a massive selection of bangers that have been and will be dominating the D&B dance floors for a long time to come. For D&B Headz, Kryptonite is my must buy album for 2010.
It is hard to pick some stand-out tunes from this album, every song is incredibly well produced, and the variety on this album is actually quite stunning. Moving from feel-good, liquid d n' b such as “Hypercaine”, to deep, dark and brooding songs such as the Noisia-esque “Acid Rain”. If you are a fan of d n'b there will be something on this album for you.
When out in a club keep an ear out for the nice vocal reworking of 'Gold Dust' featuring Ce’cile as this is one of the few vocal remixes that I actually like, and I can see this song doing the d n' b circuit for a while to come. Another stand out tune is 'Lassitude', which takes some inspiration from 'System' by Nu:tone; it is a nice sing along track with a huge build up and some funky synths.
“Chacruna” and “Fight” are two Dubstep tracks that appear on this album, I was very excited to hear what DJ Fresh brought to the Dubstep table, but after about a week both of these songs got a little stale for me; the drums ended up sounding a bit laborious and the sounds were maybe a little thin, especially in “Fight”. A good attempt at Dubstep from the d b' b King, but like quite a lot of d n' b producers trying to write Dubstep I think maybe Fresh is missing that little spark that brings dubstep to life.
Oh yeah and I forgot to mention, the tune that you have all been waiting for…'Heavyweight.' Yes it is on this album; the shame is that I have heard this song so many times already that now that I finally own it I have lost a little bit of excitement about it.
Over all a brilliant showing from DJ Fresh, who has firmly put himself right up there with the best d n' b producers in he world.
9/10
