Released 8/12.09, EMI Records
‘This Is War’ is the eagerly awaited third studio album from America’s 30 Seconds to Mars. After being sued by their record company for breach of contract this band have been plagued with problems. Yet with a lawsuit and a push back on the release date this album has been worth the wait.
It is powerful, atmospheric and emotive with lyrics that show lead singer Jay Leto baring his soul. The backing choir on many of the tracks work, it adds a new dimension to their sound that not only draws you in to their anguish but gives you a sense of hope and confidence. It is this battle that shapes the album.
New single 'Kings and Queens' acts as a self help book, with Leto stating that ‘through blood and pain’ we should defend our dreams; it is 30 Seconds To Mars putting advice into an anthem.
‘Night of the Hunter’ is the one of the standout tracks showing the full potential of a band that have worked their fingers to the bone touring endlessly to get their music heard. This song has a more electronic feel compared to earlier work which for some will mean reaching for the stop button. For others however it will mean embracing a change and experimentation in sound. With lyrics such as ‘I will break your heart, tear you to pieces and rip and you apart’ and ‘I will get revenge’ it is a song on the defensive, proving as Leto has said in interviews, that “there’s only one choice, and that is to fight for and follow your dreams”.
With choruses reminiscent of Queen it is an involving and mature album that connects on a level that will ensure an increase in support for this band that are still plagued with criticism for being that band with the Hollywood actor for a front man who uses his status to sell records.
'This Is War' is full of tension and moments of utter determination. It is Leto pushing his voice to the limits proving he and his band deserve their place within the music industry, and sounding a message to everyone that this band is not to be messed with. They have a new found confidence that seems unbreakable, untouchable and strength that will not weaken. This band is as one, a unit taking on whatever is thrown at them.
